Valéria França

Learning Korean online: 7 great teaching strategies my teacher uses

Valeria França has been an ELT professional and educator for around 30 years. She now works as Head of L&D for Edify Education. Her main focus today is in the field of L&D and creating  virtual learning experiences. She is a BRAZ-TESOL past President and lecturer on the NILE MA programme I’ve been learning Korean online for three months now, taking a lesson once a week. It’s been a huge pleasure to embark on this journey with my teacher Youn Chu and she employs teaching strategies which have helped immensely in terms of maintaining learner engagement, in terms of supporting my learning of Hangul and the calligraphy, in terms of pronunciation and language use. In this presentation I’ll share with you some of her strategies and explain how they have helped me as a complete beginner.

Michelle Hudson

Fostering Teenagers' Autonomy

Currently based in Spain, Michelle Hudson has been in ELT since 2011. She holds the Cambridge C2 Proficiency certificate, CELTA, TKTs Modules 1-3. She delivers training mainly on teaching teenagers. Considering that most of our teenage students have a lot on their plate already (struggling to deal with loads of homework, projects and extra-activities): would you agree that it’s quite challenging to keep them motivated with their online classes with us? If so, I invite you to this session in which I’ll be sharing with you some ideas on how to help your learners develop their autonomy in their English proficiency. Based on my experience, I’ve noticed that there are some strategies that we can devise with our students so that they will feel empowered to keep on studying on their own, which is key to their long-term success as effective communicators.

Renan Lemes

Offsetting the Affective Filter in Online Lessons

Renan Lemes has been a teacher for 13 years and over the last 6 years he has been delivering online classes. He has a B.A. in English, Portuguese and Literature, as well as graduate  courses in Teaching in Higher Education (Docência no Ensino Superior) and Current Trends in Education (A Moderna Educação). He is also a Cambridge speaking examiner and holds the TKT, Celta and the CPE. In addition to a cognitive experience, learning is definitely an emotional one. In light of that, in this talk we will not only figure out what role emotions may play in our learners’ process, but also come up with useful suggestions and strategies to implement in our lesson planning in order to, hopefully, boost up their sense of achievement, as well as curb both frustration and anxiety.

Henrique Zamboni

Helping Teenagers Thrive With Songs

Henrique Zamboni has been in ELT for almost 15 years. He holds a degree in ‘Letras’, the CELTA and the C2 Proficiency certificate. He is the founder of Inglês Para Adolescentes. Songs can be a very resourceful and powerful tool in teenage lessons.
In this talk, we will think of different ways to use songs to teach our students language. What is more, we will delve into the teens’ world and reflect on some of the most common challenges they face during this period of life.
Can we help them overcome these barriers using songs in our online lessons?

He’s involved with teaching English through theater, games and songs. He’s the author of the books “The Classroom is a Stage – 40 Short Plays for English Students,” “101 Dicas Para Você Aprender Inglês Com Sucesso,” “Aprenda Inglês Cantando e Aprenda a Cantar em Inglês” and “Você Consegue Aprender o que Quiser,” all published by DISAL. Videos are a great source of authentic language. Teachers love to use them to practice listening comprehension. However, video segments can be used to present, practice or reinforce language. They are great to teach grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In this very practical workshop, participants will experience different activities using short clips. At the end, participants will be better able to design their own activities using videos. They’ll also be able to download all the videos used.

Higor Cavalcante

Online CELTA – a few lessons learned in over two years of online courses

Higor is a teacher, teacher educator, and CELTA tutor, having worked on CELTA courses based in São Paulo, Istanbul, Prague, and Barcelona, both face-to-face and online. He's been in ELT for over two decades and his main interests in the area include extensive reading, phonology, and language development for teachers – about which he’s written Inglês para professor (2015). Higor is a former president of BRAZ-TESOL (2019-2020), a founding member of BRAZ-TESOL’s Teacher Development SIG and its current president. When I was first invited to work on an online CELTA course, in April 2020, I was a bit wary. Curious, excited, but wary. How is teaching practice going to work online? Is it going to work? Do I even have enough experience teaching online to provide candidates with useful, meaningful suggestions? How will monitoring work? What will the impact on error correction be? How will this affect rapport? There were many questions and very few answers, because there simply had never been online CELTA courses before. In this talk, I’ll discuss the answers I have found for these and other questions, and will also suggest ways in which these lessons I’ve learned in the past two years can be applied to teacher training (and teaching) in general.
