Reconnect with the heart of teaching at “Beyond Content: The Heart of Meaningful Teaching”

In the fast-paced world of education, it’s easy to get caught up in meeting goals and covering content — but what if we paused to ask: What truly matters in a child’s learning journey? Our event invites educators of young learners to slow down and reflect on the essence of teaching and learning. Together, we will explore how schools and teachers can respond to the real needs and interests of today’s children while nurturing the deeper values that shape tomorrow’s society.

Grounded in the belief that children are complete human beings — with their own feelings, experiences, and wisdom — this session challenges us to rethink what is meaningful in language education. Is teaching English only about preparing learners for future success, or can it also be a way to connect, express, and make sense of the world?

Through reflection and dialogue, participants will be encouraged to reconnect language and childhood, discovering how English teaching can become a more human, joyful, and transformative experience for both teachers and students.

Talk 1: Meaningful teaching and meaningful learning: connecting language and childhood - Juliana Tonelli

When we think about TEYL what comes to our hearts? Is it learning for a successful professional life? Is it learning a language that is globally valued?
Based on the premise that children are complete human beings with their own needs, feelings, histories, knowledge, what can be considered meaningful in the teaching and learning context?
In this talk, teachers will be encouraged to deep into some topics and challenged to consider how language and childhood can be placed together making the process more significant for both: teachers and students.

Talk 2: Learning with heart and mind: Let’s talk about it! - Lucy Crichton

As educators of young learners, do you ever question the pace and priorities of your curriculum? Do you wish there were more space for students to truly experience their learning, to slow down and make deeper connections? This talk invites us to reflect on what is truly essential in a child’s education and in life. Together, we’ll explore how schools and teachers can respond to the needs and interests of today’s students while nurturing the deeper values that will shape tomorrow's society.
