I am running for reelection for the position of Leader at the Center-West Chapter because I have a lot to contribute to our Association. As Leader of our Chapter, and Coordinator and Board member of the Brasília Chapter before that, together with our current Coordinators Ricardo Cézar and Stephanie Duarte, I have been helping organize and deliver events with excellent results. I will continue what was started in Tatiana Faria’s tenure to bring together not only members from our Chapter, but also other SIGs and Chapters to co-host our semester events. I also feel it is important to help first-time presenters, as the local Chapter is the first step in this new world of conferences and seminars. I feel ready to accept this ongoing challenge and contribute to our association even more! Our desire is to have not only more teachers join the Center-West Chapter, but also to find new partnerships through more activities such as Podcasts, Online events, etc, and learn with the excellent team of teachers who are already there to share their expertise and knowledge. Together we are stronger!

SHEILA PEREIRA PEIXOTO

Biodata
I’ve been an ELT teacher since 2007. I hold a degree in Letras (Licenciatura Inglês) from UFMG (2018), as well as CELTA, TKT, and TKT CLIL certificates. Over 18 years, I’ve taught a wide range of learners, from very young children to business and academic English students, in both language and regular schools. I currently teach private students online and I am interested in bringing to the online environment the same sense of connection found in face-to-face classes.

Statement of purpose
I’m running for this position because I believe BrazTesol plays an essential role in supporting and enriching the work of English teachers in Brazil. It offers a valuable space for connection, collaboration, and professional growth. Community is vital to any profession, particularly now, as many of us work online and lack the informal support of a teacher’s lounge. In this context, organizations like BrazTesol, which provide an environment that fosters these interactions, are more important than ever. Having experienced the isolation of working online, I’ve personally benefited from BrazTesol’s initiatives. Now, I would like to contribute more actively and give back to the community. Since the lockdown, I’ve developed a strong interest in intentional online communities. I’ve studied this topic, followed several successful online groups, and completed courses related to organizing and managing digital spaces. I believe this knowledge could benefit BrazTesol as it continues to evolve its online presence. I bring enthusiasm not only for ELT but also for learning about management and organizational development, which I consider essential for helping educational communities thrive.

As Coordinator, I would focus on keeping communication with members open and clear, helping to organise events and initiatives, and encourage participation so that members can be heard. I see this role as a chance to help the community by making it easier for members to connect, share ideas, and feel part of the SIG. I am also a member of the IATEFL Learning Technologies SIG and will be a roving reporter for them in Brighton next year, administering their social media during the conference days. VICTOR CARREÃO

Biodata
Victor has worked in varied educational contexts for almost 20 years. He is currently an English language arts teacher in a bilingual school. He holds a PhD in linguistics, focusing on sociolinguistic research, and has also worked as a speaking examiner for international exams. Lately, he has been trying to bring science communication and classroom practices together in order to help teachers and students to better understand linguistic variation within English language teaching.

Statement of purpose
I have been working in the ELT industry in Brazil for almost 20 years now. With a strong background in research (an M.A. and a PhD in Linguistics), I had the opportunity of speaking at important ELT events (like the British Council’s BBELT and New Directions conferences, the NYTESOL ALWC, and DISAL webinars), and publishing scientific papers in important magazines (such as IATEFL’s Speak Out, CbTeCLe, and Humanising Language Teaching). Through science communication, I believe it is easier to connect theory to what teachers have been doing in their classrooms. I was a content creator for the British Council’s Courses for Teachers, and a YouTuber for TESOL’s International Association. When it comes to pronunciation, I have been helping teachers regarding how linguistics can be applied in the classroom, especially in the latest discussions about “accents” (which I prefer to name “linguistic varieties”). Pronunciation teaching and research in Brazil may be better explored by combining two approaches to its study: (i) Brazilian learners are in a setting of “bilingualism in a monolingual context”; and (ii) the global connections our country has highlights the need of exploring English as Lingua Franca. It is important to take Brazilian Portuguese’s complex nature into account, as it will shape the English variety we, Brazilians, will speak. Stella Bortoni-Ricardo's work on educational sociolinguists helps us to understanding how teaching languages must always start with the learners' linguistic variety. This should be the direction we must follow as teachers.
