Interculturality in action | A Panel Discussion
What does interculturality mean in language education today? Whose cultures, identities, and voices are represented — and whose are still missing?
Join the BRAZ-TESOL Intercultural Language Education (ILE) SIG and Black English Language Teachers (BELT) SIG for an online panel discussion.
We will consider how interculturality is approached around the world, how it can become part of everyday language teaching, and what teachers need to foster intercultural competence in meaningful and inclusive ways.
We will also take a critical look at teaching materials and representation, asking not only how we teach culture, but who gets to represent culture — and who gets represented.

- Dr. Darla Deardorff
Dr. Darla K. Deardorff is UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Competence at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, research scholar at Duke University in the US, and faculty through Harvard and holds several other faculty appointments at universities around the world including in Japan, China, and Canada. Regularly invited to speak around the world, she’s.founding president of the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence, a global nonprofit, and author/editor of 15 books and 60+ chapters/articles.
- Dr. Antonieta Megale
Antonieta Megale is Technical-Scientific Director of the SEB Learning Design Research Center and a faculty member at the Federal University of São Paulo. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Campinas, including doctoral research at European University Viadrina, Germany, and completed postdoctoral research at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). She is co-founder and co-director of the International Collaborative for Bi/Multilingual Education Research Group. Her research focuses on bi/multilingual education, interculturality, biliteracy, teacher education, curriculum, assessment, and collaborative research with educators.
- Dr. Stephan Hughes
Stephan holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics. He is an English Language teacher, trainer and adjunct lecturer. His main research interests are in educational technology and self-directed learning. He currently teaches the IGCSE and IB English at The British School of Rio de Janeiro.
