Evidence-based Techniques for Teaching

In this talk, Professor Russell looks at three teaching techniques which have a sizable body of research to support their use, explores the value of an evidence-based approach to teaching and then examines direct teaching, self-testing and feedback. We will look briefly at the research and consider the theoretical underpinnings of this research, namely the concept of cognitive load and the importance of background knowledge. While these may seem like common sense teaching practices,  they are not always embraced or fully implemented by teachers.
